What is a stock index?
You know the class average on a test? An index is the class average for a group of companies. One number tells you if they did well overall.

Why would a company sell pieces of itself?
Good question! Selling shares lets a company raise money without taking a loan. The stand gets cash to grow, and the new owners get part of what it earns.
