What you'll learn
- Rayleigh scattering. Here's a good one: the sky is blue because of how air scatters sunlight. Sunlight contains every color of the rainbow.
Questions this course answers
Why is the sky blue?
The sky is blue because of how air scatters sunlight, making blue light scatter roughly six times more strongly than red light.
What causes sunset colors?
Sunsets are explained by the same effect as the blue sky, where sunlight crosses far more atmosphere at dusk and the remaining reds and oranges dominate after most of the blue has been scattered out.
Why doesn't the sky look violet?
The sky looks blue rather than violet because, although violet is scattered even more than blue, the sun emits less of it and our eyes are less sensitive to it.
