What you'll learn
- What Learning Actually Is. Learning is a lasting change in how your brain stores and uses information. It's not the same as memorizing facts for a test and forgetting them a week later.
- Cognitive Load and Working Memory. Your brain has a limited workspace for holding and processing information at once.
- Progressive Difficulty and Scaffolding. Your brain learns best when challenge grows slowly, not all at once.
Questions this course answers
What is learning?
Learning is a lasting change in how your brain stores and uses information. It happens when your brain rewires itself so you can do something new, understand something differently, or apply what you know in a fresh situation.
What is working memory?
Working memory is your brain's limited workspace for holding and processing information at once. It can only juggle a few things before it drops them.
What is cognitive load?
Cognitive load is the mental effort required to handle information. When you try to process too much at the same time, you hit cognitive load and your brain starts to fail.
What is memory encoding?
Memory encoding is converting new information into a form your brain can keep and retrieve later. When you reduce the load, encoding works better.
